Tasnif Parvaneh Sho (http://fisliah.com/deadactor/Endless-Vision/Tasnif%20Parvaneh%20Sho.wma)

Mastery implies complete and undivided devotion. The term, too often abused and misused, denotes something rare, a total completion of a vision. Indeed, when musicians become masters it is because there is no longer separation between their physical form and the sounds they create; they have manifested a ceaseless ritual through the music they make. So while a number of artists tag on such surnames, when you encounter a true master you instantly know. With Endless Vision, we find two such people. 1If there were ever any rifts of sonic distinction between the classical traditions of Iran and Armenia, those walls have tumbled. Hossein Alizadeh, one of the most well known Persian instrumentalists in the world, performing on the shurangiz (a new Iranian plucked lute borrowing from the setar and tambur), sits aside Djivan Gasparyan, Armenia¹s infamous duduk player. Between the two, the accolades run deep: Alizadeh and his Grammy-nominated Masters of Persian Music, while Gasparyan has performed on soundtracks to “The Last Temptation of Christ” and “Gladiator,” as well as creating the excellent Black Rock with Canadian guitarist/producer Michael Brook. Both men have allowed minor variation and true innovation in their careers, though remaining committed to exploring their native folk musics. 1

This particular exploration, recorded live in September 2003 at the garden of Tehran¹s Niavaran Palace, reveals the subtle and intricate latticework formed by two men weaving one vision. Joined by a backing ensemble of nine musicians (including two other Gasparynans, Armen and Vazgen, on duduk and bass duduk), there is no weakness throughout; if there are two masters, all others deserve major titles. Ali Samadpour’s performance on the koozeh (clay drum) and Afsaneh Rasaei’s cherubic vocals merit equal attention. 1

Yet when Gasparyan’s mournful, plaintive tones rise from his flute, that dangerously melancholic tone, there is no denying the depth of his sincerity. If “master” had one synonym here, it would be “grace.” On the opening “Birds,” a 22-minute spiral featuring numerous solos, quietude, shrieking vocals and a melodious rapture, the true intent of both traditions emerges: this is a music of devotion. If there is to be no space between player and played, the provider of music and the provider these musicians claim their highest, the music must remain in a state of purity. If any innovations arise, it is by extension of their faith.1

This comes across most clearly in the solo outings: Alizadeh on “Shurangiz Improvisation,” Gasparyan with “Armenian Romances.” This is where the soul of each shines forth, intimate meditations on the spiral. When the ensemble reconvenes, the circles continue, and within these cycles a sound ancient and familiar is born. As the final chimes of “Tasnif Parvaneh Sho…” conclude, you realize you’ve lived through an epic poem stretched over one hour of sheer brilliance.1

The modes in Persian music follow complex and diverse rules. Thus, during an improvisation, the musician can hardly anticipate the nature of the expression sought for. It is only on the spot in the presence of an audience that this expression can come about. Without an audience such a phenomenon certainly requires much more strength and concentration from the interpreter.1

The very conception of the different modes in Persian music is the fruit of various states of inner feelings. From dawn to dusk, we experience a multitude of emotions that can be expressed through a peculiar mode. The number of modes twelve like the twelve months of the year as well as the different melodic sequences arising from them, contribute to this phenomenon.1

With their more or less symmetrical intervals, the tempered modes (such as Segah, Shur and Nava) bring about a state of calm and concentration, while others (such as Tchahargah) do not follow these criteria of equilibrium but engender a feeling of movement and agitation. There are also modes expressing something that goes beyond these time and space criteria. The feeling they generate is universal. Such is the case with Avaz-e Esfahan, evoking love and separation. 1

Ara Dinkjian is best known as the founder of the highly influential and groundbreaking instrumental group, NIGHT ARK, which recorded four CDs for RCA/BMG and PolyGram/Universal. His compositions have been recorded in thirteen different tongues by top singers and musicians throughout the world (including Eleftheria Arvanitaki and Sezen Aksu), proving that music is indeed the international Tongues. His hit “Homecoming” (“Dinata Dinata”) was performed at the closing ceremonies of the 2004 Athens Olympics. Ara Dinkjian is also considered one of the top oud players in the world. He was chosen to represent the Armenians in the international oud festivals of Jerusalem and Thessaloniki. One of the most striking features of Dinkjian’s oud style is his uniquely beautiful tone.

"An Armenian In America" is Dinkjian's first solo CD. It was recorded live at the 2005 International Oud Festival in Jerusalem. The program showcases his oud playing and timeless compositions. He is accompanied by the world-class musicians Zohar Fresco on percussion and Adi Rennert on keyboards. Beyond category, Dinkjian continues to create his own unique musical landscape. 1

Through his music, Yinon Muallem uniquely combines his abilities as a composer along with his rich experience as a percussionist. 1
He creates music which distinctively combines rhythms and
melodies from an array of musical genres. 1
Yinon was born in Israel in 1968 to parents of Iraqi origin. He began his musical career playing Latin percussion but was drawn to Middle Eastern music going back to his roots. Through his career he has developed his own unique style, playing middle eastern percussion instruments such as the darbuka, the def, the bendir, the Iranian zarb, the kanjira (south Indian tambourine) and the Gatham (clay pot). 1
In 1998 he began playing the oud and later went to Istanbul to study with Yurdal Tokcan-one of Turkey's foremost oud players. Later, Yinon joined Istanbul Sazendeleri, a Turkish instrumental group made of some of the leading virtuosos of Turkish music. Yinon has performed with Ross Daly (Greece), Yair Dalal (Israel), Omer Faruk Tekbilek (Turkey, USA), Suleyman Erguner (Turkey), Alim Gasimov (Azerbaijan), Subash Chandran and Ganesh Kumar (India), Zhubin Kalhor (Iran), Piris Eliyahu (Israel), Eyal Sela (Israel), Muhammed Alnuma (Iraq), Shelldon Sands (US) and dancer Berrak Yedek (Turkey). Yinon's music is not limited to one specific style. This can be seen through his collaborations with such artists such as the accomplished Turkish classical harpist Sirin Pancaroglu as well as hid participation with the Turkish Tkefen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israeli Andalusian Orchestra. 1
Yinon has performed in a variety of festivals and given concerts in Japan, Turkey, Estonia, Spain, the USA, Belgium, England, Holland, Greece, Switzerland, France, Czech Republic, Bosnia, Cyprus and Israel. 1
In 2003 yinon's talents as a composer and arranger were revealed for the first time in his original album, Changing Moments (Magda Records). He released his second album Klezmer for the Sultan in 2005 (Oriente Muzik). 1
In addition to composing, performing and recording, yinon conducts percussion courses and workshops and has released an instructional DVD on Middle Eastern Percussion. 1
Yinon currently lives in Istanbul, where he continues to create, develop and perform his music.1
